There are those with such auspicious beginnings in life that you know fame and fortune will almost certainly be theirs. That wasn't the case for James Macbeth. His dad was a lawyer, as was his grandfather and he grew up on a Glasgow tenement estate, which didn't have a weekend drama club called "Star Searchers". So it's something of a surprise that the soon to be 25 year-old is now the toast of Hollywood. It's funny to think that he had thought about being in either the Navy or going into priesthood in his youth. It was for selfish reasons however. He had wanted to explore the world, and he figured that might have been the only way to do it. But once he hit 14, he realized there were easier ways to explore the world. Plus he had discovered ladies by then and certainly didn't want to give that up.
His mother was his only way into another way of travel, and he really fell into that by accident. Linda Morris-Macbeth is a very popular playwright and traveled to America to show around a new play she had written. Naturally, her son begged her to let him come along and she agreed under the promise that he would act out a monologue in her script. At her third meeting, he was approached by a casting director to do a reading for him of a pilot called "Clarissa Explains it All". It was there that destiny took over. Two weeks later, he got the call that he hadn't gotten the part of Sam Anders, but there was a director casting a film called Empire Records. At 16 years old he had his biggest role yet as Warren, a young man who tries to rob a record store but instead ends up an employee. His mother moved to America with him, but his father stayed back in Scotland. James lived in Los Angeles while they shot the film and he auditioned for other projects, and went back to Glasgow during his breaks.
Soon after, he was offered scripts left and right, but turned most of them down. Having a playwright for a mother had its perks, and knowing how to pick a script was one of them. Unfortunately, as his career just started to soar, his relationship with his father began to disintigrate. Generations of men in the Macbeth family had become lawyers, and Andrew Macbeth had assumed his son would be following suite. The failing relationship between father and son took it's toll on husband and wife in turn. But being Catholic, they refused to divorce. Once James turned 18, he moved to London permanently.
